Overview

The GVIF (Gigabit Video InterFace) is a digital video interface (SerDes) standard developed by Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation(SSS) that is capable of transmission with both coaxial and differential pairs. When it debuted in 1997, the multi-wire analog interface was still the mainstream, so the GVIF was sent out into the world as a revolutionary product capable of high-quality digital transmission of video with differential pairs only.

Thereafter, we began leading the industry, acting quickly to equip the device with a content protection function for the transmission of film content and other videos. Today it is widely used in applications such as automotive infotainment and ADAS (advanced driver-assistance systems).

Technical Features

Technology that enables high-speed, large-volume, and high-flexibility transmission

Compatible with various cables and connectors

It is compatible with both differential STP cables and coaxial cables alike as well. While long thin cables or relay connector can cause significant signal attenuation, an adaptive cable equalizer enables communications that better maintain optimal signal quality. It also suppresses EMI and increases noise immunity tolerance.

Original protocol achieves compatibility with multiplex transmission and Daisy Chain connection.

Our original protocol can transmit both video and audio data, and is even capable of I2C, SPI, UART, and GPIO communication as well as independent, fully bidirectional transmission of video and audio data.

Alongside conventional peer-to-peer connection, Daisy Chain compatibility is also becoming more widespread. It does not simply repeat data; it superimposes multiplexes and deletes video data to enable higher flexibility in video data transmission.

Adaptive Equalizer

The ideal waveform can be reproduced, regardless of the cable length and attenuation rate, by monitoring the amplitude of the equalized waveform. In addition, attenuated signals can be corrected by passing the signals through an AGC circuit at the receiving end.

High Noise Tolerance

The GVIF LSI has a circuit configuration that is resistant to clock jitter and power supply noise in consideration of multi-stage use such as repeater connection.

・FIFO circuit in the clock input stage is for loading externally input video
・All LSI internal circuits, through which high-speed signals pass, are differential circuits.

Low Noise Radiation

GVIF has achieved test results that satisfy Class 5 grade stipulated by the CISPR 25 Ed. 3.0: 2008 standard "Vehicles, boats and internal combustion engines - Radio disturbance characteristics - Limits and methods of measurement for the protection of on-board receivers" created by the International Special Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR: Comite International Special des Perturbations Radioelectriques).
