Overview

“SORPLAS” (Sustainable Oriented Recycled Plastic) is an original high-quality recycled polycarbonate resin. Regardless of being a recycled material, it is applicable for appearance surfaces as it maintains excellent gloss. It is possible to provide SORPLAS with various capabilities such as high rigidity, impact resistance and high flame retardancy utilizing proven technology concerning blending of raw materials and additives.

In addition, the amount of CO2 generated during its manufacturing is greatly reduced from virgin flame-retardant polycarbonate resin. It has also been technologically confirmed that the characteristics can be maintained even after repeated recycling, the fact may contribute to the reduction of environmental impact in the future.

Features

Giving new life to your old plastics

By incorporating waste optical discs collected from factories, rental shops, etc... and waste water bottles, “SORPLAS” will contribute to the realization of a recycling-oriented society.

Upto 99% recycled content

To realize product manufacturing with lower environmental impact, Sony developed an original high-performance flame retardant (additive to prevent or slow of burning), which is essential for the manufacturing of the flame-retardant plastic. With this original flame retardant, it is possible to secure the performance with an extremely small amount, so the groundbreaking levels of recycled material content that can be included up to 99%.

*) The fact that general frame-retardant recycled plastics conventionally used in electronic products only includes around 30% of recycled materials. (according to Sony research)
*) The rate of recycled material use differs by products.

Simultaneous achievement of environmental impact minimization and materials performance maximization

The advantages stemming from the minimal use of flame retardant in “SORPLAS” are not limited to the groundbreaking levels of recycled material content that can be included. With SORPLAS, it has been technologically confirmed that there is hardly any deterioration seen due to the additive, even in high temperature, and high humidity test (Figure 2) and repeated melting and kneading (Figure 3), so a high level of durability has been achieved as a flame-retardant polycarbonate resin.
