Image sensors featuring both high resolution and high-speed data output

Overview

The IMX927 is a global shutter image sensor for industrial applications that boasts both an effective pixel count of approximately 105.51 megapixels and high-speed output of up to 100 frames*1 per second.
With the rapid advancement of factory automation, there is a growing need for vision cameras capable of shooting various objects at high-speed and with high image quality.
This product features a unique back-illuminated structure and is capable of low-noise and high-definition imaging even with the high pixel count. In addition, by combining Sony’s high-speed readout technology with next-generation high-speed interfaces, it has achieved data transfer at speeds of 100 Gbps. The ability to process large volumes of data rapidly enables not only higher inspection precision but also shorter inspection takt times in advanced inspection methods such as automated optical inspection (AOI) and three-dimensional inspection (3D-AOI).
The IMX927 is one product in the IMX927 Series lineup featuring a total of 16 products of eight types. These cover a range of 12 to 105.51 megapixels, and two of these products - the IMX927 and IMX937 - boast the highest pixel count. The lineup offers a wide range of options according to the inspection application and environment, helping professionals build flexible and scalable camera systems.

Features

Multi-pixel, high-speed imaging with 105 MP at 100fps

The IMX927 Series achieves multi-pixel, high-speed imaging by adopting a new circuit structure from a predecessor, the IMX925, thereby successfully enhancing the internal signal processing speed and parallelizing processing. Above all, the IMX927, the highest-end model, makes the most of this technology to achieve high performance of 105 MP at 100 fps*1.
In addition, the series adopts back-illuminated pixels that feature low noise and high light-collection efficiency, achieved using Pregius S™, Sony’s proprietary global shutter technology. This provides the series with high-definition, high-speed output while simultaneously delivering high image-quality performance.

High pixel count, high sensitivity, and wide dynamic range to support advanced inspection

Even with the 2.74 µm miniature pixels, the series offers high sensitivity and saturation capacity, made possible by Sony’s proprietary back-illuminated pixels and stacked structure. This allows high-sensitivity, wide-dynamic-range, and high-resolution imaging in the detection processes for semiconductor and precision equipment manufacturing, an area in which the demand for high-definition inspection is increasing, as well as in the recognition of large objects such as displays.
In addition, this series offers the IMX947 and IMX949 with 5.48 µm pixels to provide even higher sensitivity. These products are suitable for capturing images at short shutter speeds, which is required for high-speed imaging.

Compatible with next-generation, 100-Gbps class, high-speed camera interfaces

The IMX927 Series provides high-performance image sensors compatible with next-generation, high-speed camera interfaces such as the CoaXPress-over-Fiber (CXPoF) and 100GigE. They realize a cutting-edge image solution that allows high-resolution and high-volume data to be instantly obtained without degradation via these interfaces, which feature high-speed, long-range transmission, and stability.

Newly developed ceramic package equipped with connectors for greater camera design and mounting efficiency

The IMX927 Series features a newly developed ceramic package with connectors for all types. All 16 products have standardized connectors and are pin-compatible, ensuring compatibility in camera design. Additionally, the detachable design facilitates easy sensor replacement according to specifications. Furthermore, these common connectors contribute to simplifying camera assembly operations compared to surface-mount-device (SMD) technology.

Compatible with the latest*2 SLVS-EC

The IMX927 Series is equipped with the latest SLVS-EC interface. Supporting up to 12.5 Gbps/lane, these sensors are capable of high-definition and high-frame rate imaging. The high data rate per lane means the same amount of data can be sent with fewer lanes, enabling more FPGA options.

1-shot high dynamic range (HDR) function

These sensors have a 1-shot HDR function which allows them to expand the dynamic range while keeping the current frame rate and resolution settings. This function is useful for capturing images that include materials of different properties and reflectivity levels, such as metals and rubber.

Multiple binning modes

This series supports several binning modes, including V2 × H1 and V1 × H2 pixel unit binning, as well as 2 × 2 pixel unit binning. These modes can facilitate improved sensitivity and speed while maintaining the necessary resolution in the direction required by the application.

* Only compatible with monochrome models of the IMX927, IMX928, IMX929, IMX937, IMX938 and IMX939.

Subsampling a specific color

For readouts, these sensors are able to subsample and read out pixels of a specific color, among blue, red, and green. This makes it possible to switch between subsampling imaging and full-pixel imaging, delivering both color imaging and wavelength-specific irradiation pattern imaging with just one sensor.

* Only compatible with Bayer models of the IMX927, IMX928, IMX929, IMX937, IMX938 and IMX939.

Application

2D/3D AOI

As factory automation advances, 2D/3D AOI is playing an increasingly important role in machine vision technology for the manufacturing industry. Used in a wide range of production lines, this type of AOI benefits from global shutter image sensors, which can capture moving objects and synchronize with lighting. Demand for superior AOI systems is particularly high at facilities where electronic devices and other such products are mass produced. The IMX927 Series offers high resolution of 105.51 megapixels and a high frame rate of 100 fps*1, contributing to improved inspection precision of high-speed 2D/3D AOI, where high-speed and high-volume capture is required.

3D inspection (structured light method)

Structured-light 3D measurement involves projecting a specific pattern using a projector or laser-type light source. The projected pattern is captured and analyzed for distortion to obtain 3D measurements with high precision. In the industrial sector, this method is used for processes like quality control, product inspection, and robotic order picking systems, to which the IMX927 Series can also be applied. The ability to realize high-frame rate and high-resolution imaging enables reliable 3D measurement of wide areas in short periods of time. This can help reduce inspection times and contribute to highly accurate inspection results.

3D inspection (laser cutting)

Laser-cutting 3D inspection is a method of obtaining the target object’s height, position, and shape profile data at high levels of precision, without contact, by projecting a laser beam and capturing the reflected light with a camera. Increasingly, laser-cutting 3D inspection is being adopted for inline inspections and shape-recognition applications, and the IMX927 Series is an effective option for this method. With the capability of capturing undistorted images at high frame rates, these product provide support for efficient inspection and production in situations that require capturing and processing large volumes of images with high definition and at high speeds. To improve 3D sensing accuracy, a high-sensitivity imaging function based on the binning mode is available, allowing images to be captured in environments that require more contrast.

Flaw inspections

IMX927 Series image sensors provide both high resolution and high-speed imaging capabilities, making them suitable for ever-stricter quality control standards and faster production lines. In defect-inspection processes for manufacturing semiconductors, flat panel displays (FPDs), and lithium-ion batteries, they offer high-speed and accurate detection of minute surface abnormalities and defects due to non-uniformity, contributing to improved product reliability and yields.
In addition, the series includes eight model types (16 products in total) that feature a package with standardized connectors, allowing flexible camera design according to the application.
