High Horizontal Resolution of 8K/6K and Wide
Aspect Ratio Global Shutter Image Sensor
1.4" 16.41MP IMX901
1.1" 12.38MP IMX902
Overview
The IMX901 and IMX902 are global shutter image sensors that can achieve high-resolution imaging with approximately 16.41/12.38 effective megapixels, respectively, thanks to their 2.74-um miniature pixel and horizontal-only 8K/6K high pixel count (wider aspect ratio). In recent years, logistics systems have been impacted by a trend for wider conveyor belts and faster speeds. This requires image sensors that can help expand the code-reading coverage area when scanning goods while also improving imaging performance and efficiency. Cameras with the IMX901 or IMX902 can capture a wide area in the horizontal direction in just one shot, allowing users to reduce the number of cameras compared to conventional multi-camera systems, which contributes to lower overall system costs. They can also meet needs for capturing wide subjects moving in a specified direction, even in general-purpose machine-vision inspections. The capability to capture a subject across a wide area in just one shot improves imaging efficiency.
Features
Wide-aspect-ratio image sensor with industry-leading*1 8K horizontal resolution achieves a wide angle of view
The IMX901 is compatible with C-mount lenses, which are commonly used in industrial applications, so it can offer a wide angle of view in high definition with 8K horizontal resolution and 2K vertical resolution. It can increase the imaging coverage area in inspection and barcode recognition applications, where the width of conveyor belts is steadily increasing. With these sensors, a single camera can capture a subject in a wider field of view while maintaining high resolution in the required direction. This allows existing systems with multiple cameras to be consolidated down to just one, enabling simplification.

High pixel count and high resolution
With miniature pixels of only 2.74 μm and C-mount-compatible image sizes of Type 1.4 and Type 1.1, the IMX901 and IMX902 achieve high resolution of approximately 16.41 and 12.38 megapixels, respectively. The high pixel count allows these sensors to improve the precision of text recognition in code reading and to detect fine defects and scratches in visual inspections.
With a dynamic range of over 70 dB, even fast-moving subjects are captured with vivid clarity
These interfaces achieve high-speed capture and high image quality without distortion thanks to the Pregius S, with Sony’s proprietary back-illuminated structure. They also feature low noise and high saturation, resulting in a wide dynamic range of over 70 dB. What’s more, their high frame rate of 134 frames per second*2 allows them to capture even fast-moving subjects with vivid clarity.

Equipped with a wide variety of output interfaces (compatible with SLVS-EC, MIPI, and SLVS)
The IMX901 and IMX902 are equipped with SLVS-EC interface so they can handle up to 9.5 Gbps/lane,*3 enabling high-definition and high-frame rate imaging.
The high data rate per lane means that they need fewer lanes to send the same amount of data, resulting in a wider range of FPGA options.
They are also compatible with MIPI and the SLVS interface, typically found in industrial camera applications. With such a wealth of interface options, the IMX901 and IMX902 can be applied flexibly to a wide variety of camera system structures to meet user needs.

Application
Barcode reading
In the logistics industry, barcode recognition is used to automate sorting, and there are demands for better accuracy and higher speeds. Also, because of recent increases in logistical efficiency, conveyor belts are becoming wider and operating at higher speeds, so there is growing demand for high resolution global shutter image sensors that can capture a wider area.
When using high resolution image sensors, there are general concerns about larger camera systems and higher costs. The IMX901 and IMX902 can achieve efficient high resolution imaging in the required direction only, overcoming the potential disadvantages of using general high resolution image sensors.

Visual inspections
Global shutter image sensors even play a role in a type of general machine-vision inspection called visual inspection. In use cases that involve wide subjects moving in a specified direction, the IMX901 and IMX902 can selectively capture only the necessary data in high resolution (IMX901: 8K and IMX902: 6K). They are also compatible with C-mount lenses, which are commonly used in industrial applications, so they are expected to help minimize the cost of sensors, lenses, and cameras.
The IMX901 and IMX902 can even be applied to imaging in cylinder inspections, where the exterior of a cylindrical object is inspected. Users need to inspect a cylindrical object while it is rotated within a limited range that suits the focus. This makes wide aspect ratio sensors ideal; they can capture the lateral angle of view in just one shot with high definition.
When inspection camera systems are installed on a conveyor belt, line-scan sensors are sometimes used. It is expected that using the wide-aspect area scanning method for cameras with the IMX901 or IMX902 can simplify installation compared to line scanning while capturing the width direction of the belt with high resolution.

Board inspections
In the production processes of electronics manufacturing, there are some cases where multi-camera systems are used in order to inspect a wider area. Cameras that use the IMX901 or IMX902 can capture a wide field of view, helping to consolidate (reduce) the number of cameras needed in multi-camera applications.

3D inspections (Photo cutting)
IMX901 and IMX902 sensors can even be applied in 3D inspections using the photo-cutting method, where the surface of a subject is illuminated with a laser in order to measure position or shape. Because the number of pixels necessary in the vertical direction is limited, the wide aspect ratio can be used to efficiently capture images in the horizontal direction.
