The Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group will sponsor the 2nd GLOBAL NATURE POSITIVE SUMMIT 2026, an international environmental summit focused on natural capital and biodiversity, to be held in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, on July 14 and 15, 2026. In addition to participating as a speaker in a session themed on Kumamoto’s water resources, the group will also exhibit at the concurrently held exhibition, NATURE TECH!.
High-purity water is indispensable for semiconductor manufacturing, and the groundwater of Kumamoto is a vital water resource for both our group and the local community. For many years, the group has worked in collaboration with regional stakeholders to promote groundwater recharge and the efficient use of water. At this summit, under the theme of “Semiconductors and Water: Sony’s Manufacturing for the Future,” we will introduce our initiatives aimed at achieving coexistence between semiconductor manufacturing and water and natural capital, through sessions, workshops, and booth exhibitions.

◆Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group: Session Participation and Exhibition Overview

- Participating companies will introduce collaborative models and cutting-edge technologies that support the development of nature positive watersheds, with a focus on Kumamoto’s water resources.
- From the Sony Semiconductor Solutions Group, we will introduce our groundwater recharge initiatives, which have been continuously implemented since 2003 in Kumamoto in collaboration with local governments, farmers, agricultural cooperatives (Japan Agricultural Cooperatives, JA), and NPOs, as a semiconductor company that uses large volumes of water.
We will also present our efforts to reduce and recycle water usage within our manufacturing sites, while sharing our approach to integrating responsible water use in our operations with contributions to the local water cycle, and our commitment to coexistence with local community.

- Interactive Workshop: Semicon Masters — Let’s Protect Water and Produce More Semiconductors!
Through an original card game designed for elementary school students, we will offer an interactive program in which participants can experience semiconductor manufacturing in a way that feels more familiar, while enjoying learning about the importance of water resources. - Booth Exhibition
Through panel displays, we will introduce initiatives undertaken at our semiconductor manufacturing sites to conserve water resources.
In addition, through activities such as distributing coloring sheets printed on seed paper* and providing digital books, we will communicate the importance of natural resources—such as water and electricity—in semiconductor manufacturing in a way that is easy for children to understand.
The booth will also feature hands-on demonstrations, including a full-scale sensor mock-up and 3D CG images of the underwater environment captured using Sony’s image sensor technology.
* Seed paper is an environmentally conscious recycled paper made from 100% used paper pulp embedded with flower or herb seeds, which can be planted to germinate, with the paper eventually returning to the soil.
- We reduce and recycle water usage in our manufacturing processes while also replenishing water resources through groundwater recharge*. Recognizing the importance of local water resources, we emphasize circulating water rather than consuming it.

Our groundwater recharge initiative using flooded agricultural fields began in 2003, marking the first such effort by a Japanese company. Based on the principle of “returning what we use,” we have continued this initiative through ongoing dialogue with the local community, achieving recharge volumes that exceed the amount of water withdrawn.
* An initiative that leverages the geological characteristics of the midstream Shirakawa River basin, where water easily permeates, by channeling river water into farmland and returning it underground.
