Remote and Wide-area Monitoring

Overview

As video and information technology evolves, the need for aerial photography and remote monitoring is increasing for a variety of purposes. Aerial photographs are used not only for cartography but also for various reports and video production, as well as to grasp the surrounding conditions of specific equipment, to enhance disaster management, and more. Remote monitoring is useful for continuous observation of specific locations and to produce videos in various applications. The following section describes how image sensors can be used in these fields.

Applications

Aerial imaging

IAerial photos are used for creating maps, observing and recording specific areas, and other purposes. Aerial imaging involves the use of flying objects such as airplanes and drones with cameras, and it is executed by taking many aerial photos over a wide area and synthesizing them. If the area of coverage is wide, it is necessary to produce many high-definition photos in a limited time space.

Sony’s rolling shutter image sensors and global shutter image sensors offer models with a wide field of view of more than 35 mm. These image sensors can ensure a wide angle of view per image, which enables reducing the number of photos and time required for shooting. This high-quality imaging also helps to ensure crisp aerial images without blurring.

Remote monitoring

In remote monitoring, since airborne particulates can cause blurring in far-off objects, it is sometimes difficult to capture good images from cameras at long distance. Since light in the Short Wavelength Infra-Red (SWIR) band has a longer wavelength than visible light, it is less affected by fine particles in the air. With SWIR image sensors, it is possible to clearly capture distant objects by efficiently capturing SWIR wavelength light.
