Overview

Image sensors are installed in security cameras and are widely used for security measures in a wide variety of facilities and for safety maintenance in urban environments. Recently it has also been widely adopted in fields such as home security and dashcams. Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation is contributing to achieving a safer society with a wide range of sensor lineup, from image sensors for security cameras with high sensitivity, low noise, and excellent dynamic range characteristics to event-based vision sensors that enable privacy-friendly monitoring in nursing facilities.

Street monitoring

Security camera image sensors are widely used for safety measures in urban environments.

Shooting in an urban environment requires high imaging performance because there is a large change in the ambient brightness compared to indoor shooting. Sony’s security camera image sensors satisfy this requirement with the advanced imaging capability —these sensors have both low noise and high sensitivity characteristics and prevent whiteclip or blackout even at night or in highly variable lighting conditions, contributing to the maintenance of a safe society.

Event-based vision sensors, which can detect the movement of a subject without being affected by the lighting environment, are also effective in monitoring the movement of people. By using them in combination with standard type of security Camera image sensors, it is possible to build a higher performance monitoring system.

Facility surveillance

Security measures in commercial, financial, and airport facilities require image sensors suited to their respective objectives and conditions. For example, in crowded areas with people moving about, image sensors need features such as high resolution and wide angle of view, while for security measures in buildings after the lights are out, they need high imaging performance in dark locations. Sony’s wide range of security camera image sensors cater to a variety of needs such as these.

In addition, ToF image sensors are useful in checking congestion status of stores, airports, theme parks, etc., monitoring open/ close status of automatic doors, and managing entry/ exit of facilities. Even in situations where people are closely overlapped, which is difficult to judge with two-dimensional sensors, multiple people can be easily distinguished and the number of people can be counted accurately.

Disaster risk monitoring

Natural disasters like flooding rivers and landslides in mountainous areas have become a social problem in recent years. Given this, there are strong needs for solutions like SPRESENSE™ ,board computer for IOT , which can predict disasters early by using AI to analyze information collected from sensors, such as cameras and microphones. SPRESENSE™ is low power consumption, so it can run on batteries or other external energy harvesting sources (environmental power generation). Its compact size also allows installation in many versatile and remote locations.

Safety monitoring for nursing facilities

Monitoring systems for nursing facilities are attracting attention not only for their usefulness in maintaining safety for facility users and reducing the burden for caregivers but also as a system to reexamine issues with facility care through the continuous accumulation and analysis of data. ToF image sensors can be applied in human activity monitoring with consideration for privacy as they can capture people and objects as three-dimensional information (not as video information). Event-based vision sensors are also expected to be applied in this field. This is because they can detect movement from changes in the silhouette of the subject and output it instantly with light data, which makes them suitable for combination with machine learning.

Elder care and monitoring

The shortage of care workers has become a social issue in recent years. It is possible to support care workers with monitoring the elderly by using the SPRESENSE, board computer for IoT to combine collecting of various types of data with edge computing image processing AI, audio analysis processing, and analysis processing data from various sensors.

GNSS receiver LSI and constant sensing function with low power consumption enables to monitor the behavior of the elderly and to provide a safe living environment.

Home security systems

Security camera image sensors are also used to enhance home security. They can be used for a variety of purposes, including for guarding the house during a long period of absence and keeping an eye on elderly or young members of the family at home. They can capture clear images even at night and in environments with highly variable lighting conditions.

Demand for drive recorders is rapidly increasing for recording traffic accidents and for recording/ preventing road rage, which has become a social problem in recent years. With high sensitivity, low noise, and wide dynamic range technology, Sony's security camera image sensors capture critical footage regardless of the time of day or the shooting location.
