Research and Investigation

Overview

With improvements in image sensor technology, the application of image information is expanding in various areas of research and investigation. In the field of science and technology, the improved performance of microscope cameras makes it possible to record the movements of microorganisms and bacteria that were previously difficult to capture. Sensing technology is also being applied in the measurement of scientific data in a variety of fields, including medical care. Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation offers a wide lineup of image sensors combining a variety of features to meet the needs of a broad range of fields.

Applications

Digital microscopes

A digital microscope is a type of microscope that uses an image sensor to process information obtained by the eyepiece for observation on a liquid crystal display (LCD) monitor. Image sensors for such applications are required to have high sensitivity, a high signal-to-noise ratio, high dynamic range, uniform pixel performance, and high resolution. With high sensitivity in visible light to the near-infrared spectrum, Sony’s rolling shutter image sensors satisfy such conditions and contribute to better precision in digital microscope observation.

Scientific data measurement

Event-based vision sensors capture the movement of each pixel as a change in brightness and output only changed data with low latency. This means they are likely to process data at high speed and with low computational load.
Without the frame-rate limitations of conventional methods, these sensors follow objects moving at high speed without interruption in the time axis direction and convert the images into data.

UI/UX development

Event-based vision sensors are suited for gesture tracking such as hand movements, since they can capture the movement of individual pixels as changes in luminance and output only changed data with low latency. Applications in combination with Time of Flight (ToF) image sensors are also currently being researched.

Digital archiving of cultural heritages

Efforts are being made to record ancient documents, paintings, murals, and other cultural heritages in order to preserve evidence of them before their conditions deteriorate. Previously, large items were photographed in sections to generate a whole picture. However, large-size image sensors offer an innovative new method to capture these objects in one shot.

Sony’s large-size image sensors for industrial use have more than 100 megapixels and are suitable for this purpose. Rolling shutter image sensors are ideal for taking low-noise images of a static object. Global shutter image sensors are capable of delivering undistorted still images of moving objects, or shooting a target object while moving the camera with it.
