Overview
In today’s medical field, advanced devices like image sensors and OLED microdisplays are enhancing patient care. Image sensors, for example, are used in devices such as endoscopes, where capturing images inside the human body with high-definition, real-time imaging assists accurate diagnoses and treatments. Meanwhile, devices such as surgical head-mounted displays and simulation systems benefit from OLED microdisplays, thanks to their high-resolution and high-contrast display performance capabilities. These devices contribute to medical care in practice by improving diagnostic accuracy and surgical safety.
Applications
Medical endoscopes
Medical endoscopes are widely used medical devices in gastroenterology, otolaryngology, urology, and many other fields of medical care, from diagnosis to treatment. The performance of the image sensor mounted in an endoscope is critical for the early identification of lesions as well as the realization of less invasive examinations and surgical operations. For ascertaining situations inside the body, clear, high-definition images are essential. Furthermore, there is demand for smaller image sensors for better operability of endoscopes.
The image sensors for endoscopes IMX446/IMX447 from Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation (SSS) are compact CMOS image sensors with high-sensitivity and high-frame rate capabilities. They make it possible to reduce the diameter of the scope end of a flexible endoscopic system, thereby contributing both to easing patients’ discomfort and realizing excellent observational performance.
Surgical head-mounted displays
Medical head-mounted displays used in surgery require clear imaging with low latency. The OLED microdisplays from SSS display images precisely with low latency while also decreasing the weight of headsets to reduce the burden on surgeons.
EVF for retinal cameras
OLED microdisplays are also used in ophthalmology, for retinal examinations, and in eye surgery simulation systems. The OLED display provides crisp, high-contrast examination images.
